What are signs and symptoms of Premenstrual syndrome?

The following signs and symptoms often accompany PMS.
  • Abnormal bloating and weight gain
  • Br**st swelling, tenderness
  • Mood swings
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Skin disorders
  • Changes in appetite, food cravings
  • Changes in interest in s*x
  • Headaches, backaches, cramps
  • Inability to concentrate, loss of interest in usual activities, confusion

Who is at more risk?

Women with a history of the following conditions are at a higher-than-average for having PMS.
  • Dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation)
  • Depressive, mood, anxiety, or bipolar disorders (family history, too)
  • Postpartum depression or psychotic episodes
  • High stress

How to prevent PMS?

Premenstrual syndrome can be avoided by reducing stress, increasing exercise, and making dietary changes around the time of menstruation.

What is the treatment of premenstrual syndrome?

Treatment is done in accordance to the underlying dosha:
  • Vataja premenstrual syndrome:
  • Diet: Favor warm, oily, sweet meals. Restrict spicy and bitter. Avoid coffee, tea, tobacco, drugs, and extremely spicy foods.
  • Oleation (Snehan), sudation (Swedan) and enema (Vasti) with vat pacifying drugs.
  • Oleation of lower abdomen with sesame oil (til ka tail). Start oleation a week before the expected date of menses.
  • Followed by hot tub bath- sudation.
  • Use tampons medicated with Guduchyadi tail or sesame oil around 7 days before menses start.
  • Take 2 spoons of Shatwaryadi ghrita or Kasmaryadi ghrita orally after meals once a day.
  • Take 1 tsp Erand sneh (castor oil) at night-time with warm milk.
  • Take Pushyanug churn- 2.5gms with honey before breakfast.
