Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

  • Pain at the affected joint.
  • Stiffness of joints
  • Restricted movement
  • Prominent swelling
  • Pains even on touch.
  • Pain becomes worse after movement
  • Crackling like noise heard between joints
  • Weakness in muscles
  • Eruptions of bony knobs near site of pain.

Diagnosis

  • Physical examination-
  • Redness and swelling
  • Crepitations (a crackling noise that may be heard and sensation felt when bone is rubbing on bone due to lack of cartilage)
  • X-rays
  • Blood tests

Treatment

  • Reduction of stresses on joints using crutches, or a cane
  • Physical therapy including exercises and walking
  • Hot and cold packs, diathermy and paraffin baths
  • Drugs- non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), preparations of gold salts, Anti- malarial drugs
  • Surgery

Treatment on Basis of Ayurveda

    Diet Therapy
  • Food products like- Apples, Oranges, Cloves, liquorices, raspberries relieve pain
  • Food products like- Cherries regenerate cartilage.
  • Remove all inflammatory causes from your diet- like ladyfinger, arbi, black gram, rice etc.
  • Add anti-oxidants in diet like- Papaya, Pumpkin, Coriander, Guava, Walnuts and Mangoes
  • Avoid consumption of all animal products other than fish
  • Periodic fasting is also very effective for osteoarthritis
  • Include green vegetables, carrots, barley, sprouts and sesame seeds in your diet.
  • Avoid the following foods: alcohol, coffee, sugar, saturated fat, hydrogenated fat (margarine), excess salt, spinach, cranberries, plums, buckwheat, nuts.
  • Weight reduction, through diet and exercise, is also recommended in treating arthritis.
  • Fresh cooked and hot food should be consumed in regular diet.
  • Ghee and oils in moderate amount are necessary in daily diet.
  • All the spicy, deep fried and very oily and pungent food recipes should be avoided.
  • Avoid too cold food, cold drinks etc.

Exercises

  • Perform non weigh bearing exercises like swimming or cycling.
  • Avoid too much of walking

Vitamins and Minerals

  • Vitamin D is essential to bone and cartilage health as it prevents breakdown of cartilage.
  • More extensive research on vitamin E revealed that people with osteoarthritis experienced a significant reduction in pain after taking 600 mg of vitamin E per day.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids are found in flaxseed, rapeseed, and walnut. Omega-3 fatty acids decrease inflammation and reduce the activity of enzymes that break down cartilage.
  • Manganese is among the substances that the body needs to build cartilage.
