Yoga and Osteoarthritis

  • Padasanchalan - Leg Movement- To increase the flexibility and stamina of legs & hip muscles
  • Janusanchalan- Knee Movement- To increase the flexibility and strength of knee & waist muscles.

Ayurveda and Osteoarthritis

  • Swedan fomentation: fomentation of the particular area or the complete body with herbs like Kapas (Gossypium herbaceum/ cotton), Kulthi, Til (Sesamum indicum), Erand mool (castor root), Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa/ spreading hog weed).
  • Local application of hot packs made up of herbs like Saunf (fennel), Vach (Acorus calamus), Gokhru (Tribulus Terrestris), Varun chhal (Crateva nurvala/ three leaved caper)
  • Castor oil: 5ml of castor oil with warm milk at the night time.
  • Rasnasaptak kwath: 20 ml, twice a day with equal quantity of water, half an hour after meals.
  • Maharasnadi kwath: 20 ml, twice a day with equal quantity of water, half an hour after meals.
  • Maha yograj guggul: 250 mg twice a day with water, after meals
  • Vatari guggul: 250 mg twice a day with water, after meals
  • Adityapaka guggul: 250 mg twice a day with water, after meals
  • Vat vidhwansak ras: 250 mg twice a day with water, after meals
  • Mahanarian tail: for local application at the site of pain
  • Bala Tail: for local application at the site of pain
  • Mustard oil: for local application at the site of pain

Herbs used in Osteoarthritis

All the herbs enlisted below are potent vata-har. They balance vitiated vata by bringing back to normal ratio.
  • Balsamodendron mukul: guggul: salai guggul: gum tree- Sushrut Samhita, describes the use of guggul in rheumatism and obesity
  • Gossypium herbaceum: Indian cotton: anti spasmodic
  • Aloe vera: It has been recognized for many years that some aloe Vera-derived products have significant anti-inflammatory activity. Aloe reduces inflammation, decrease swelling and redness. Several studies compared Aloe to Prednisolone and Indomethacin (common anti-inflammatory drugs)
  • Shallaki: Boswellia serrata One of the principle constituents in the gum resin is boswellic acid which exhibits anti-inflammatory activity. This Indian herb is historically been used as an antiarthritic and antiinflammatory
  • Dhatura: DATURA METEL: Dhatura can be used in following ways to relieve pain:
  • Poultice, made by bruising the fresh leaves into a pulp, and mixing them, with the aid of a little water, with an equal weight of rice flour, to the consistence of a poultice.
  • Fomentation, made by infusing the leaves in boiling water, in the proportion of one ounce to each pint of fluid
  • Liniment, prepared by macerating, for seven days, one ounce of the bruised seeds in a pint of sesame or other bland oil, and straining
  • Clove: The therapeutic properties of Clove oil include: analgesic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, anti-neuralgic, carminative, anti-infectious, disinfectant, insecticide, stimulant and tonic. As a pain reliever it helps with toothache, mouth sores, rheumatism and arthritis
  • Grind the bark of Moringa oleifera make a paste. Massage this paste on joints once a day for seven days.
  • Ginger: adrak: Ginger is described in Ayurveda systems of medicine to be useful in inflammation and rheumatism. It also acts as an antispasmodic.
  • Nirgundi: Vitex nirgundo: chaste tree: plays an eminent role in treating arthritis.
  • Shilajeet is a very powerful anti-inflammatory agent. It has been shown to reduce acute chemically induced edema by 77%. The antioxidant properties also help to prevent inflammation. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties help to decrease and relieve joint inflammation and pain.
  • Turmeric: haldi: Because of its ability to reduce inflammation, turmeric may help relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
  • Rasna: Pluchea lanceolata: it reduces pain.
  • Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra/ mulethi)-an anti-inflammatory herb also relieves pain.
