Diarrhea is common in childhood with an average of 10-15 episodes in first five years. Significant dehydration disturbing water and electrolyte balance occurs in about 2-3 % of children. If diarrhea becomes unusually prolonged or is recurrent the child becomes severely malnourished as he loses nutrients through stool. Child with multiple episodes of diarrhea suffers severely from protein energy malnutrition.

Causes of Diarrhea

  • Contaminated food, water and milk
  • Microorganisms
  • Malnutrition
  • Unhygienic environment
  • Food allergy
  • Diarrhea due to worm infestation
  • Diarrhea as a side effect to medicines

General Pathogenesis

Atisar = Ati + Sar => excessive watery secretion.

This is due to vitiation of Vata. Vata along with increased water humor decreases the digestive rate and expels stool innumerable times out of the body in large quantities. The stool is watery and loose in character.
