Non Suppressible Urges

“na vegandharyetdhemanjatan mutrpurishyo:I
na retasso na vatasya na chardhyo: shvathon ch II
na udgarasya na jrimbhaya na vegan shutpipasayo: I
na vashpasya na nidraya ni:shvasasya shramen ch II “

Maharishi Charaka has defined thirteen non-suppressible urges.

These are

1. Mutra (urine) 2. Purish (stool/ feces)
3. Retas (semen) 4. Vat (flatus)
5. Chardhi (vomit) 6. Shvatho (sneezing)
7. Udgar (burp) 8. Jrimbha (yawn)
9. Shut (hunger) 10. Pipasa (thirst)
11. Vashp (tears) 12. Nidra (sleep)
13. Shwas due to parish ram (breathlessness due to exertion)

All the above-mentioned urges somehow depict physiological action of the body. And if any of these is suppressed, then there is birth of pathology.

3. Shukra veg (suppression of an urge for seminal discharge) - Pain in scrotal region

- Body ache -Dysuria
- Retention of urine
- Massage with vata-har oils.

- Diet- add alcohol, mutton, milk, rice, black gram 
- Enema

4. Apan vayu (suppression of flatus) - Obstruction of flatus, feces and urine
- Pain in abdomen
- Fatigue -Headache
- Drowsiness
- Massage
- Fomentation
- Suppositories
- Vata-har diet

5. Vaman (suppression of an urge for vomiting) - Itching -Anorexia
- Edema -Anemia
- Fever -Nausea
- Erysipelas
- Initate vomiting by emetics
- Fasting
- Steam inhalation
- Blood-letting
- Laxative drugs
6. Shvatho (suppression of an urge to sneeze) - Torticollis -Headache
- Facial paralysis 
- Hemicrania -Fatigue
- Massage
- Nasal inhalation
- Intake of medicated oil orally
7. Udgar (suppression of urge for eructation’s) - Hiccough -Breathlessness 
- Anorexia -Tremors
- Pain in chest
- Treatment as that of 
hiccough
8. Jrimbha (suppression of an urge to yawn) - Convulsion -Tremors
- Flexion of body -Spasm
- Anti vata remedies
9. Shudha (suppression of an urge to eat- hunger) - Lethargy -Emaciation
- Anorexia -Drowsiness
- Hot, warm, light and nutritious diet
- Massage
- Rest
10. Pipasa (suppression of an urge to drink-thirst) - Dryness of throat and mouth
- Lethargy
- Fatigue -Depression
- Cool and nutritious drinks
- Cool environment
11. Vashp (suppression of an urge to cry) - Cold -Diseases of eye
- Anorexia-Giddiness
- Cool and nutritious drinks
- Cool environment
- Sleep
- Alcohol
- Pleasing talks
- Distraction from the current environment
12. Nidra (suppression of an urge to sleep) - Yawning-Fatigue-Sleepy behaviour-Headache- Heaviness in eyes - Sleep
- Massage
- Warm bath
- Hot warm heavy food-milk, mutton, black grams etc
13. Shram jany shwas (suppression of an urge to deep breathing on exertion) - Sprue-Pain in chest
- Unconsciousness
- Rest
