It has originated in Peruvian and Mexican regions. It was introduced into Europe by the Spanish explorers in the early sixteenth century. European migrants later on introduced into India by the Portuguese though there is no definite record of when and how it came to India.

Macroscopic identification: it is an annual plant similar in shape to that of brinjal. It is 2-5 feet in height. Fruit is green in color in unripe condition and turns red when ripe.
