Macroscopic Identification

It is a perennial tree. Leaves are toothed, lanceolate and pointed. Flowers are white inside, rosy at the margin of the petals. The fruit has a thick rind, which is dark yellow when fully ripe.

Fruit is the edible portion of lemon and is used for various purposes.

Pharmacological action

Citrus flavonoids have potential antioxidant (prevents aging), anti-cancer, antiviral, anti-inflammatory activities, effects on capillarity, and cholesterol-lowering ability. Lemon juice is widely known as a diuretic, anti scorbutic, astringent, and febrifuge. In Italy, the sweetened juice is given to relieve gingivitis, stomatitis, and inflammation of the tongue.

Action and uses in Ayurveda

It’s actions also include antacid, anti fungal, anti microbial, anti sclerotic, anti scorbutic, anti neuralgic, anti rheumatic, antispasmodic, cicatrisant, coagulant, cooling, depurative, detoxifying, disinfectant, emollient, febrifuge, haemostatic, hepatic, lowers blood sugar, hypotensive, immune stimulant, insecticide, laxative, stomachic, styptic, and vermifuge.

Therapeutic Classification Index: Blood and Haemopoeitic Tissue: It is a good general blood and body purifier. Lemon has been found to promote leukocyte formation , dissolve cellulite, increase lymphatic function, and promote a sense of well being. Lemon’s effects upon circulation include it’s ability to lessen high blood pressure, reduce varicose veins and help stop nose bleeds.

Respiratory System: Lemon juice is good for asthma and pneumonia. Due to lemon’s antispasmodic properties; it can help when asthma is present. It can clear catarrh from the respiratory tract and aid in the treatment of bronchitis.

Musculoskeletal System: It is highly recommended in acute rheumatism. It’s effects upon muscles and joints can be it’s ability to relieve painful arthritis and rheumatism. Though the lemon juice is sour in taste, its reaction in the body is alkaline and as such it is valuable in the treatment of rheumatic affections such as gout, rheumatism, sciatica, lumbago, pain in hip-joints which result from too much acid in the body. A sufficient intake of lemon juice prevents the deposit of uric acid in the tissues and thus reduces the possibility of an attack of gout.

Digestive System: Digestion can be improved due to the ability of lemon to alkalinise the body. In this way, dyspepsia can also be alleviated. A ripe lemon is a good appetizer. The lemon juice stimulates the flow of saliva and gastric juice and is regarded as an excellent digestive agent. It destroys intestinal worms and eliminates the gases formed in the digestive tract. It is highly beneficial in the treatment of several digestive problems like dyspepsia, constipation and biliousness. Taking the juice of half a lemon in a little water easily relieves heartburn.

Urinary system: It is a mild diuretic. The juice may be used in diaphoretic and diuretic draughts.

Scurvy: It’s power in preventing and arresting scurvy is unequalled by any other remedy, except a liberal supply of fresh vegetables of the cruciform family. In scurvy, 1 or 1.5 ounces of the juice per day, is a preventive dose, and when the disease manifests itself, 4 or 6 ounces per day will arrest it. The lemon is chiefly valued for its vitamin C content. Its juice contains more vitamin than the whole fruit, being about 60 mg. per 100 gram. The juice also contains appreciable quantity of vitamin B. This makes it anti scorbutic or an excellent food medicine for the prevention and treatment of scurvy. A mixture of one part of lemon juice, three parts of water and a desirable quantity of sugar or honey should be taken in this condition.

Burning Soles and Heels: Sliced lemon should be rubbed over the entire burning soles and heels of feet. A great deal of toxin elimination takes place through the pores of the feet. Lemon application promotes such elimination and keep the feet free from pain and distress.

Skin: Lemon juice is a natural antiseptic, which may be safely applied directly to cuts, bruises and infections. It is anti scorbutic and febrifuge. Lemon is useful for skin care in that it can deter acne, anaemia, brittle nails, boils, chilblains, corns, wounds, oily skin, cold sores, insect stings and bites, mouth ulcers, age or liver spots, throat infections and warts. The decoction has been found to be a good anti periodic, useful as a substitute for quinine in malarial conditions, or for reducing the temperature in typhoid.

Ear, Nose, Throat: It is given to relieve gingivitis, stomatitis, and inflammation of the tongue. Lemon juice in hot water prevents cold.

Cancer: Recent studies have further shown that limonoids inhibit the development of cancer in laboratory animals and in human br**st cancer cells as well as reducing cholesterol.

Uses of Lemon

  • Lemon juice if used as eye drops relieves the patient from jaundice.
  • If lemon juice mixed with equal quantity of jasmine oil is applied to the infected area of dry scabies, it gives marvelous results in curing jaundice.
  • Put one or two drops of the lemon juice in the nostrils to stop bleeding from the nose.To prevent blood clots and heart attack, have a tablespoon of roasted channa daily.
  • To stop bad breath, gargle with warm water mixed with juice of half a lemon.
  • To get rid of lice from the hair, massage equal quantity of garlic and lemon juice to the roots of hair and let it dry. In two hours, all lice will die leaving your hair clean and free from lice.
  • To relieve pain in the joints, mix lime juice with til oil in equal proportion and rub over the affected limb.
  • A mixture of linseed oil and lime water is a splendid remedy for burns.
