Menstruation prior to menopause can follow any of the following patterns

  • Sudden cessation of menses
  • Scanty menses
  • Infrequent menses
  • Irregular menses
  • Excessive bleeding

Symptoms

Vata Type: Tingling and numbness, pain in the joints and muscles, backache, cervical arthritis, insomnia, nervousness, anxiety and restlessness.

Pitta Type: There is more irritation and hot flushes.

Kapha Type: Oedema in joints and legs with lethargy are very common.

Self Help

  • Take a well balanced, nutritious diet
  • Exercise regularly
  • Keep yourself busy
  • Avoid cigarette smoking
  • The family should afford full support, love and affection to the woman during the climacteric period

Changes that take place during Menopause

  • Fall in the oestrogen level
  • Decrease in the oestrogen androgen ratio
  • Fall in progesterone level
  • Ovaries, fallopian tubes and the uterus atrophy and become smaller in size.
  • Vag*** becomes narrower and Doderlien's bacillus is absent. The va***nal pH becomes alkaline
  • Vulva atrophies and the pubic hair become scantier
  • Br**st fat is reabsorbed and the nipples decrease in size. Ultimately they become flat and pendulous
  • Loss of muscle tone leads to anatomical changes in the urethra, neck of bladder and the uterus.

Dietary changes during Menopause

During the reproductive years, a woman’s cycle is regulated by a variety of hormones, the most important of which are osestrogen and progesterone. Around the time of menopause, the production of these hormones reduces dramatically and this can give rise to a number of symptoms including night sweats, hot flushes, mood disturbances and loss of libido. The hormonal changes that accompany menopause are also associated with an increase in risk of certain medical conditions such as osteoporosis.

Certain dietary changes may help women during and after the time of menopause and reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Soya products and soya milk may help to reduce hot flushes and reduce the risk of osteoporosis because they contain certain compounds that have oestrogen like activity in the body.
