Healing Yeast Infection with Ayurveda

Dr. Kunal Arora

Ayurveda considers yeast infection as mainly a kapha disorder where a woman has more of kapha and less of agni. Below are given the ways by which you can decrease ‘kapha’ and cure the infection.

Vayu: krudh: kafam yonimupniye prdushyet II
Pandum sudamasravam shwetam sravti va kapham I

(C. C 30/21, 22)

According to Mahrishi Charaka ‘upapluta’ is caused in pregnant females due to Vataja dosh that carries vitiated kapha to genitals and cause white discharge along with irritation and foul smell.

Causes of vitiation of kapha as mentioned in the above shloka are:
  • Oily, heavy, sweet diet
  • Suppression of an urge to vomit or expire
Mahrishi Vaghbhatt has also given the same description but has not restricted the disease to pregnant ladies only.

Candidiasis (also called fungus, yeast or monilial infection) is the most common type of va***nal infection. Yeast organism -Candida, causes it.

Candidiasis is often hard to get rid of and recurrences are common. Many women with this infection do not notice any sign or symptom, but if they do it is described as odorless, white and cheesy discharge.

Though it can affect any women but it is more common in:
  • Diabetic patients
  • Pregnant ladies
  • Obese females
These three cond- itions alter the basic metabolic rate and va***nal pH rendering it more prone to infection and promoting growth of fungus.

Treatment includes treating the underlying cause and then ruling out fungal infection along with it. In most cases candida infection is controlled by treatment alone but many times especially in diabetic and pregnant females it takes time to rule out.

Several factors increase the susceptibility to infection. They are:
  • Pregnancy- pregnancy causes imbalance of hormones therefore change in va***nal pH, making it susceptible to yeast infection.
  • Prolonged use of antibiotics
  • Birth control pills
  • Unhygienic toileting of va***nal area especially during menstruation.
  • Unhygienic use of undergarments, tampons, pessaries etc.
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Tight clothes- pants, jeans etc- poor ventilation of the genital area increases chances of fungal infection- which otherwise also likes hot humid places to survive and multiply

  • Intense itching
  • Burning
  • Redness of the va***nal tissue
  • Curdy white discharge with smell

Yeast infection is mostly a kapha disorder that involves the plasma and menstruation sorters, but it can also include the other two humors. If this is a chronic problem for you, you need a program to balance digestive system and a change in diet. You probably have a high kapha and a low agni.

A two week course of acidophillus capsules is needed, along with a few digestive spices such as cumin fennel and fenugreek. Mix equal parts of the spices and grind into a powders. Take 1/2 teaspoon before each meal for two weeks. You may also try the following:
