Monsoons - A Respite But Also a Dread

The three dreadful diseases of monsoons and their ayurvedic treatment are discussed below.

Though monsoons come to bring a glee on everyone’s faces after the scorching summer heat but at the same time brings along a number of dreadful diseases. If we take proper precautions and prevention measures against the common diseases that are spread during monsoons, we can enjoy the season of rains fully without the fear of falling ill.

Diseases that are spread during monsoon are basically water borne and gastrointestinal infections. Typhoid, Diarrhea and Jaundice are also common. Accumulation of water on the roads promotes the growth of the mosquitoes causing malaria and dengue. Eye flu and infections of the foot are also observed in this season. Also diseases like dryness, spasmodic pain, high blood pressure, gas formation and gastric disturbances occur frequently. Also, one comes across cases of viral attacks and coughs and colds.

There are three dreadful diseases that affect the common man during monsoons viz., Malaria, Typhoid, and Dengue fever / Break bone fever.

Malaria

Malaria is a serious, sometimes life threatening parasitic disease transmitted by Anopheles mosquito. Symptoms of Malaria include fever, shaking chills, and headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting. Malaria causes anaemia and yellow coloration of skin and eyes. Falciparum Malaria, if not promptly treated may cause kidney failure, seizures, coma and death. For most people, symptoms begin 10 days to 4 weeks after infection. Some parasites can rest in liver for several months up to 4 years after an infected mosquito bites a person.

Diagnosis

By examining blood and looking for parasites
Detection of Malaria Antigen is highly useful when there are few parasites in blood or when blood test is done after starting treatment.
Malaria by PCR – can detect as little as 10 to 100 copies of DNA genome of malaria parasite.

Prevention

Use of mosquito nets and long sleeve shirt and trousers.
Use mosquito repellents e.g. Coils and mats.
Avoid exposure to mosquitoes
Spraying insecticides.

Treatment

Malaria can be cured with prescription of drugs. The type of drug and length of treatment depend on which kind of Malaria is diagnosed. Hence, early and correct diagnostic plays a very important role.

Medicines for Malaria

Godanti bhasm 125 mg qid with water
Jahar mohra pishti 125 mg qid
Rasasdi vati 500 mg bd
Pipapada decoction or pshadangpaniya
Brihat kasturi bhairav ras
Visham jvarantak vati
Maha jvarantak vati
Lakshmi narrayan ras
Mall bhasm/ malladi vati
Hartal bhasm
Bhoot bhairav ras
Saptparn vati
Brihat svarjvarhar lauh
Panchkol churn 2 gms b.d with water

Kitchen Remedies

Kala jeera with gur
Trifala churn with gur
Haritaki churn with gur
Neem chhal decoction
Neem leaves fumigation in the room
Kali tulsi decoction/ expressed juice

Typhoid

Typhoid fever is caused by bacterium salmonella typhi. One gets typhoid fever if one eats food or drink beverages that have been handled by a person who is shedding salmonella typhi or if sewage contaminated with salmonella typhi bacteria gets into the water one uses for drinking or washing food. Once the bacteria is eaten or drunk, it multiples and spreads into bloodstream and causes fever. The symptoms are high fever, stomachache, and coating of tongue, headache, loss of appetite.

Prevention

Take a vaccine against typhoid
Boil water for drinking
Avoid ice balls, pani puri unless made from boiled water.
Eat properly cooked food while it is hot and steaming.
Eat fruits, which can be peeled, avoid leafy vegetables during monsoons which can be easily contaminated.
Do not buy and eat food from street vendors.
Wash your hand with soap before eating and after using the bathroom.ss
