Effects of different types of Pranayam

Anulom-Vilom Pranayama – This pranayam prepares for other types of pranayamas. So it is also called as Nadi shodhan pranayam. It is useful in overcoming the disorders of the mind such as fickle-mindedness, baseless phobias, inferiority complex etc.

Nervous system becomes more active and stabilized. It calms and steadies the mind, improves focus and concentration. Soothes anxiety and stress, balances right and left hemispheres and promotes clear thinking. It strengthens the muscles and gain control over the diaphragm movement, improves abdominal tone, singing capacity and health. It is beneficial in condition like:- Asthma, allergies, high or low blood pressure, stress related heart conditions, insomnia, chronic pain, metabolic and endocrine imbalances.

Suryabhedan Pranayam - Breathe in through the right nostril and breathe out through the left.

So, more heat is produced in the body. Body and mind becomes youthful. It improves digestion.

It destroys the diseases arising from the excess of wind, eg: Rheumatism It cures rhinitis, helpful in low blood pressure.

Ujjayi and Bhramari Pranayam
For obtaining the stability of the mind, Hathapradipika advocates time and again to bring ones continuous attention on the Naad= Sound. This includes Ujjayi & Bhramari Pranayam.

Ujjayi Pranayam - A sweet melodious whistling sound is produced from the throat. Due to the partial constriction of the throat during purak, causes increase in the airway resistance and thus can be compared to breathing against resistance. This improves the strength of the inspiratory muscles as the lungs are fully expanded during puraka. Rechaka with contracted throat muscles, creates back pressure in the lungs, thereby the airways remain patent and opened up during the whole cycle of expiration.

Bhramari Pranayam - Due to the nadanusandhaan, mental tensions are reduced, the nervous system is soothened and the mind becomes calm and stable. It is beneficial for pregnant women for the preparation of labor. This pranayam is helpful to reduce mental stress –strains, as a result the whole body is relaxed. All the systems of the body become activated. Mind becomes single-pointed. This pranayama is the best way to get rest, peace of mind and mental stability. Asthma, breathing problems, inefficient breathing etc are mitigated. It increases gastric fire, improves appetite, digestion function is activated and made more functional- ‘ shariragnivivardhanam’ Prevents throat and URI problems. It destroys phlegm, removes diseases of the nose and chest. Helps the mind to become peaceful and single pointed i.e. concentration is improved.

Therapeutic uses of Pranayama
Kapalabhati: Useful in obesity, diabetes, acidity, prostate problems, and mental disorders, sever constipation, chronic Rhinitis, Asthma or bronchial allergies, sinusitis, and kidney problems etc. Increase the glitters on the face, pamper the skin and augment the memory.

Bhastrika: Useful in chronic Rhinitis, Asthma or bronchial allergies, sinusitis, thyroid problems etc.

Anulom-Vilom Pranayam: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Parkinsonism, Allergies, and Disorders related to immunity. Opens the blockages in heart, Lowers triglycerides, L.D.L or H.D.L, Psychologically it turns the negative thinking into positive thinking.

Ujjayi Pranayam: Insomnia, Stress, Indigestion, Thyroidism, Tuberculosis patients, Spleen disorders, Excellent exercise for singers — augments the quality of voice.

Bhramari Pranayam: Hyper-tension, Stress Depression and Good for meditation.
