When we are born, most of us come into the world with bursting energy and enviable vitality. As we grow and start to abuse our bodies with an unhealthy lifestyle, unsuitable diets and other varied stresses associated with our environment, our bodies start showing signs of bad health. Today, we also see much damage being done to the atmosphere, the water and the land by us human beings only which have an adverse effect on our health. Correct nutrition is vitally important, not only to prevent various diseases but for a quick recovery from various diseases also. A balanced diet which is low in fat, high in fibre and rich in fruits and vegetables, provides the building blocks of good health.

The main aim of therapies such as Ayurveda is to emphasise the basic importance of each individual doing as much as possible to maintain his health. Ayurveda aims at educating people on the importance of a healthy lifestyle which can arouse the self healing capacities of our bodies in case of any derangement. We have to realise that health care is much more about health promotion than just relief from the symptoms of a disease. We have to make everyone realise that the responsibility of person's health lies with himself and by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and correct nutrition, one can easily take care of this responsibility.

Selection of food, cooking style and the amount of fluid intake are all that matters to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Select the freshest foods you can find. As food sits for long periods of time it becomes stale with poor flavour, texture and appearance, rancid if it contains oils (grains, nuts, seeds), depleted of nutrients which are destroyed by exposure to oxygen in the air.

Focus on fresh vegetables and fruits, and raw untoasted, unroasted grains and cereals.

Look for reliable sources for organic produce and grains, and use these as much as possible in your daily menus.

Use the simplest, shortest cooking methods possible when preparing your food in order to insure optimum retention of nutrients.
